Scanning the Registry
The registry serves as a database when configuration data is stored. All applications and hardware installed in the computer have an associated registry entry. The registry is considered to be one of the most important things to look after. Changes to the registry must only be made when needed and it must be performed by an expert. The registry helps the applications and hardware to function properly in the computer system.
When opening the registry editor the following root keys can be seen:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT;
HKEY-CURRENT_USER;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE;
HKEY_USERS; and
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG.
The registry editor can be opened by clicking Start then click Run. Type-in regedit.exe then click OK.
The file associations, settings and preferences for the user are stored in these root keys. Other things that are stored here are the settings for applications, hardware and operating system.
As you use your computer, you install and uninstall applications and hardware devices and operating system. Then registry entries become obsolete and unusable. When the size of the registry increases it can become cluttered and can cause problems to applications, software and the operating system.
Now that you have a clear view of what the registry is for then it is vital that the registry must be taken care of properly. Checking the registry constantly can get rid of the unused registry entries. This operation can also optimize the performance of the computer.
Though, this task can be difficult especially when you are not an expert. But even technicians dread the task of scanning the registry because it can be dangerous if registry entries are deleted. This is the last resort for technicians when a user’s computer is compromised or encountering problems.
Detecting errors or scanning the registry does not mean that you have to scan every entry in the registry. There are a lot of commercialized registry scanners or utilities online some are free and some are purchased. These tools allow you to clean the registry easier and faster. For the registry to be efficiently scanned, there are registry utilities that makes use of in-depth algorithms to dig deep into the registry.
Scanning the registry is required especially when the computer is infected with a virus, malware or spyware. These malicious programs and files usually attack the registry and modify registry entries. When everything has been done to get rid of the malicious programs and files then scanning the registry is the last resort.
So, when you own a computer you must know the important parts of it. There are users who simply want to tinker with it then end up destroying it. Computers get destroyed because it is infected with a virus or it is because important files are deleted.
