Fixing Freeze up Problems on your Windows XP
Are you having some problems with your PC? Computers, specifically those that use Windows XP as their Operating System, might sometime just freeze up on you. There are various reasons why your computer freezes up. At first, some computers might function properly, but then, the PC will suddenly freeze. When this happens, you will be unable to use both your keyboard and mouse. You might not be able to do tasks on your PC. The quickest solution for this would be to restart your computer, or unplug it. But this method is inefficient. To make sure that the PC won’t freeze up again, and then you should learn how to fix it yourself.
First do the following methods: One, make sure that your computer and work area are dust-free. Then, you should make use of the Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup. This will make sure that the disk will not have errors and clean it from unwanted files, specifically those that contain viruses or spywares. Make sure that you have an Anti-virus and anti-spyware and that both of them are updated regularly. You must then scan your computer with these two applications. You could also use a registry cleaner to ensure that your PC is functioning properly. If any of these still doesn’t solve the problem, then it’s time to search for the source of the problem.
There are basically three reasons why your computer freezes up. The first one is having too many programs or applications that run on system startup. The second one is due to display problems. Lastly, there could be driver conflicts on your computer.
When you install programs on your computer, some of them would run on system startup. Programs like yahoo messenger and bit torrent clients are some example. If you have many of these programs installed on your computer, then it means that the computer will try to run all of these programs as soon as you turn on your computer. If your computer could not manage to run all these programs, the computer will then hang. To solve this problem, you just need to disable some of the applications that automatically run on system startup. Click the Start button. Then click run. Type “msconfig” and press enter. Go to the start up tab and uncheck all the programs that you do not want to run on system startup.
Display problems can be identified when your PC normally boots but then goes black or display the “signal out of range” error. This happens when your PC is set to display a resolution higher than what your monitor could display. To fix this, simply press F8 at startup so that you will enter on safe mode. On safe mode, the resolution is low enough for any monitor to display. What you have to do here is to right click on the desktop and choose properties. Go to the settings tab and change the screen resolution. Restart your PC and it should function properly.
The last possible cause of freezing of your PC would be because of driver conflicts. Some of your hardware devices may not have a proper driver installed on the computer. Or it’s also possible that the driver you installed is not compatible to your hardware. To fix this, right click on My Computer, and then click properties. Go to the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager Button. If you see a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on it, this tells you that that device does not have a proper driver installed. Look for the proper driver, which could be found on the CD’s included when you purchased the hardware or you could simply download the driver on the internet. Install the proper driver and your PC should be fine now.
