What is the Windows Registry?
The Windows Registry is a key component of the windows operating system and stores all the key settings and options for both hardware and software. It also stores user specific settings and some non-operating system software too.
My Computer is running very slow of late, why?
There are many factors that may cause this, some of them are
There could be a lot of applications or programs that are started automatically and reside in memory and use a lot of processing power. An easy way to find out is by just looking in the task manager or in the system tray. Try removing ones that you don’t use that often and you will notice some improvement.
When you install or remove software or download a tool from the internet, a lot of changes are made in the windows registry and the responsibility of properly adding or deleting entries from the registry is relied on the applications or software. Some of these do not do a thorough job and thus cause problems in the registry. This is true with the addition and removal of hardware also.
Can I make changes on my own?
As mentioned above, the windows registry is very delicate and is like the heart of the operating system. Unless you have a clear understanding of what needs to be changed, it is better if you use scanning software to pinpoint the problem. You can get a free scan on this site.
How do I know if the problem lies with the registry or something else like a virus?
It is better to run a virus, adware etc scan using a leading program like Norton 360, SpyBot etc. If the problem still persists, you should scan your PC with a registry scanner like RegCure.
