The Windows Vista Registry, just like older versions of Windows, is a very important component of the Windows Vista Operating System. If even just one file gets damaged, by a corrupted file or malicious registry keys, the system gets affected. In order to escape this problem, you will need to make regular backups of your registry files. The best way, which is yet the only way because there are no known tools to do this, is to make a full backup of your registry files by manually copying and backing up all the files found in your system registry. Below are options which can help you in manually backing up your registry.
The Registry Editor
Primarily, the registry editor is used to manually edit the Windows registry. This tool can allow you to backup either a small portion or the entire registry. In order to backup the Windows Vista registry using the Registry Editor, follow these steps:
- Open the Start menu, select Run, type regedit, and then press Enter.
- Open the File menu, and then select Export.
- Type the name of the backup file in the File name box.
- Then, in order to back up the entire registry, on the Export range section select All. To back up a portion of the registry, choose Selected Branch and type the name of the branch which you want to back up in the text box.
- Choose Save and this will create the backup file.
System Restore
This is a tool which is available in Windows Vista that could rollback to the last known working condition if in case the current system settings fail. System Restore is sometimes automatic in Windows Vista if your system meets the necessary requirements. What the system restore does is take snapshots of all the system files, configurations, and your registry to create a restoration point. When you restore your system using this, all your current system settings and registry will return to the state when that snapshot was taken. System Restore however cannot backup only a certain portion of the registry, which is why when you roll back your system, all the changes made since the time the snapshot was taken are lost.
Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore
This feature is found in the Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows Vista, and it is a tool which can help recover your system from difficult conditions. By using the Complete PC Backup and Restore, you can completely backup your registry files, installed programs, configuration settings, data files, and most importantly, your operating system.
However, you cannot use this tool to backup just a portion of the system’s registry. You can only create a full backup using this tool.
Making Use of Registry Cleaners
Make use of registry cleaners to help create registry backups. Some more advanced registry cleaners just like RegCure which is Windows Vista compatible, allow you to make registry backups easily. Registry cleaners can help you make selective and full backups of your registry files instantly. Making registry backups is a popular method among users and computer technicians in order to maintain their computer’s good working condition.
Performing registry backups must be done once in a while or regularly. It is a way to ensure the safety of your operating system. Another recommendation is to save your backups not only on your hard drive but also on external hard drives, DVDs or CD’s, which you can make use in case your hard disk bogs down.
